Fatality report for the month of May

Department of Public Safety officials report an increase in traffic fatalities.  There were 62 fatalities in May 2013 compared to 59 in the same month last year.

Guthrie News PageDuring the month of May there was 10 motorcyclist and two pedestrians who died  in traffic related crashes.  The highest daily fatality numbers include 16 deaths on Wednesdays, dropping to 14 on Fridays.  There were six days in the month of May the Department of Public Safety reported no fatalities. Six of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related. Fifty-four of the fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and eight nonresidents. There were 51 male and 11 female victims.

Nine of the fatality victims were under the age of 20. The 31 – 40 year-old age group led the fatality count with 13.

Oklahoma and Tulsa County led the state with a fatality count of six, followed by Delaware with four fatalities.

The highest number of fatalities occurred on State Highways with 18. There were 17 fatalities on County Roads .

Fifty-six percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.
