Fatality report for the month of October

Department of Public Safety officials report a decrease in traffic fatalities. There were 54 fatalities
in October 2012 with a total of 56 in the same month last year.

There were four motorcyclist and three pedestrians who died in crashes during October.  The highest daily fatality numbers include 10 deaths on Tuesdays, dropping to nine on Thursdays. There were four deathless days in the month of October.

Four of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related, in the opinion of the investigating state, county or municipal officer. Forty-nine of the fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and five non-resident.
There were 39 male and 14 female victims with one unknown gender being reported.

Seven of the fatality victims were age 20 or under. The leading number of fatalities by age group were in the 21-30 year-olds with 12, dropping to nine in the 31 – 40 and 41 – 50 year olds. Tulsa County led the state with a fatality count of 10 followed by, Rogers County with five fatalities.

The highest number of fatality crashes were 15 on US Highways,  followed by 14 fatalities on County Roads.

Fifty percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash, according to DPS statistics.
