Fire departments throughout Logan County battled two grass fires along Interstate 35, which appears were started by a vehicle. Meanwhile, fire departments in Edmond also battled grass fires along the highway.
Before 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, two fires were reported in Logan County. The first fire was located south of Seward Road and the second north of Camp Road. Both were on the east side of I-35.
Oklahoma City television stations report fire crews battled four additional grass fires in Edmond.
The fire near Camp Road burned 40 acres, while the fire near Seward Road charred up 25 acres.
A battalion chief with the Guthrie Fire Department was involved in a two-vehicle accident on the highway (north of Camp Road). Both vehicles, including the department’s 2012 F-250 command unit, were towed from the scene. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters needed about 60 minutes to get control of the flames and afterwards extinguished hot spots.
Northbound traffic was narrowed down to one lane for nearly three hours.
Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow said, “The fires were believed to have started from a blown tire on a vehicle throwing hot sparks into the dry grass in the right of way.”
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office searched for the vehicle, but were unsuccessful.
Departments responding to the fires in the Guthrie area included Guthrie, Coyle, Edmond, Oak Cliff, Sooner and Woodcrest. They were assisted by units of Logan County Emergency Management, Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
