First snow of the season whitens Guthrie

With temperatures below freezing on Monday, the first snow of the season gave Guthrie a white Christmas appearance.

The white flakes began falling early Monday and continued well into the afternoon.

The white-out look will not last long with temperatures expected to rise back in the 50’s and 60’s by the end of the week.

Luckily, the snow was sticking to grassy areas, trees and flowers and not on sidewalks and roadways. However, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office did report slick spots on bridges and overpasses.

Crews will continue monitoring the weather conditions across the state and will deploy salt and sand trucks as needed. Drivers should use caution in these areas through the evening and be alert to any changes in weather conditions.

During snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:

• Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
• Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
• Be aware of “black ice,” which looks like a wet roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
• Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
