Guthrie Public Schools announced the passing of former Superintendent Max Townsend, a longtime educator whose career spanned more than four decades across Oklahoma schools.
Townsend graduated from Dover High School in 1963 and, after two years of service in the United States Marine Corps, began a wide-ranging career in public education.
Townsend served as a teacher, coach and athletic director at Guthrie High School from 1971 to 1979.
He later taught at Sayre Junior College and went on to serve as a high school principal at Kingfisher, Tipton, Hinton and Perkins-Tryon. In 1992, he became Superintendent for Cache Public Schools, a position he held for eight years.
In 2001, Townsend returned to Guthrie as superintendent, where he served until his retirement in 2004.
The family recently held a private service to honor his life, and Guthrie Public Schools expressed its appreciation for his many contributions to the district.
Former Superintendent Terry Simpson reflected on Townsend’s leadership when he succeeded him in 2004, saying, “Mr. Townsend has done an excellent job, and I’ve been privileged to work with him. He’s been an outstanding administrator, and I hope to continue the good work that he has done.”
