Freshmen and junior varsity hold off Piedmont for wins

If the freshmen and junior varsity football games between Guthrie and Piedmont are any indication for the future varsity matchup you may want to be in attendance.

The freshmen scored 14 unanswered points and had a fourth quarter stand to win 14-6. The junior varsity took the lead with 52 seconds in the game, but had to hold for a bit longer for a 21-20 win.

In the freshmen contest inside Jelsma Stadium, the Wildcats scored their lone score on a 99-yard pick six in the opening quarter.

Quarterback Cale Coffman hooked up with receiver Cade Guggisberg for a 70-yard touchdown score to tie the game at 6-all at halftime.

The lone second half score witness Coffman scoring from 2-yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter. Hector Goosby secured the two-point conversion to give Guthrie the 14-6 win.

In their first home game of the season last week, the freshmen took down Shawnee 18-7.

Coffman accounted for two touchdown runs of 24 and 69 yards.

The Jays second score on the night came on a 10-yard pass from Coffman to Goosby.

Junior varsity wins two in a row

After playing the first three games on the road, the junior varsity has won both of their home games.

On Monday night, sophomore running back Jaylex Webb scored the game’s first two touchdowns with runs of 5 and 60 yards to give the junior varsity a 14-0 lead.

Piedmont responded just before the half with a 15-yard touchdown toss to close the gap at 14-6.

The Bluejays lone score in the second half came off an interception by junior Gavin Brison, who hit pay dirt with a 20-yard score to increase the Jays lead to 21-6.

Again, Piedmont responded with two fourth quarter touchdown runs. With the Wildcats trailing 21-20, they went for two and the win, but was stopped to keep the Jays in the lead. However, Piedmont had four more chances to win it after recovering an onside kick with 52 seconds left in the game.

One week earlier against Shawnee, the junior varsity found themselves trailing 20-7, but would score the game’s final 27 points to collect their first win of the season.

Soph. CJ Ward was brilliant on offense and special teams with dazzling runs, including 31 and 60-yard touchdown runs to go along with a 91-yard kickoff return.

Webb’s third quarter touchdown run of 2-yards gave the Jays lead for good while Richie Ortiz spotted Gabe Gonzalez for a 47-yard pass and catch to secure the win.
