The Guthrie freshmen football team had a much easier time on Monday evening than the junior varsity team, but both walked away with shut-out victories over Piedmont.
On a cool, but comfortable evening, both Guthrie teams scored on their opening possessions and relied heavily on their defenses afterwards. The freshmen started the night with a 30-0 win and the junior varsity finished with an 8-0 victory.
The freshmen squad improves to 5-0 and the junior varsity 4-0. Both teams combined their teams a week ago to defeat Chickasha. Chickasha did not have enough players to fill two teams. More at the conclusion of this article.
On the opening kickoff, freshmen Blake Curtin dashed off for a 43-yard return and on the first offensive play from scrimmage it was CJ Ward taking off for a 38-yard touchdown run. The two-point attempt failed and the Jays were off and rolling.
Following a Piedmont punt, the Jays put a four play drive together resulting in a perfect pass and catch from the combination of quarterback Jackson Waddell to Marcellus Owens. The 27-yard connection and a Chase Allen two-point run gave Guthrie a 14-0 lead with 3:31 left in the opening quarter.
Again, the Jays defense forced a three-and-out to set up a seven play, 51 yard drive. The drive was highlighted by a fake punt. Waddell took the snap and ran 15 yards for the first down. Moments later Waddell hit Owens for 23 yards to set up Ward’s 13-yard touchdown run. Jays increased their lead 21-0 midway through the second quarter.
For the second time in the game, Piedmont turned the ball over on downs and set the Jays first score of the second half up.
Waddell took off on the right side of the formation and leaped into the south end zone for the 10 yard score. Highlighting the drive was a fourth down conversion with a Brody Hinkle six-yard reception and a 14-yard run by Ward. Jays lead 28-0 after three quarters.
Piedmont’s best offensive drive resulted in nine plays, but was stopped when Chris Kizzard tipped a Wildcat pass into the air and into the hands of Curtin for the interception.
The final score of the night was unusual after Piedmont snapped the ball over the quarterback’s head on three consecutive plays resulting in 65 lost yards and a safety.
Junior Varsity shut-outs Piedmont
The Guthrie junior varsity defense forced four Piedmont punts and two interceptions to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.
The Jays defense kept Piedmont’s drives to six plays, or less and forced the Wildcats three and out three separate times.
Bryce Anderson forced a Piedmont fumble and on the last possession of the game, Troy Branson intercepted Piedmont’s last chance of scoring.
The lone score came from quarterback Rigo Martinez, who scored on a 7-yard touchdown run as well as the two-point conversion. Jays running back War Mothershed got the Jays in scoring position with runs of 27 and 21.
Guthrie teams combine to win over Chickasha
Members of the freshmen and junior varsity football team combined to take on Chickasha inside Jelsma Stadium on Monday in a 34-14 one-sided game for the Bluejays.
On the first two offensive plays for the Jays, they were in the end zone.
On the first play, Jays running back CJ Ward took off for a 52-yard touchdown run down the Jays sideline to go up 7-0 after Zeb Robbins connected on the point after.
Following a Chickasha fumble, Ward scored on a 21-yard run to give the Jays a 14-0 lead just 2:11 into the game.
Later Ward scored on a 64-yard kickoff and Guthrie had a 34-8 lead at halftime.
