Ruess, who was wearing a helmet, braked and swerved to avoid entering the construction zone and lost control of the motorcycle. Witnesses at the scene say, Ruess thought the heavy piece of equipment was coming onto the highway when she began to swerve and avoid contact.

The motorcycle struck the backhoe. Luckily, Ruess was not struck by the backhoe, but the trooper says she overturned an unknown number of times.

Guthrie EMS treated Ruess at the scene and was mediflighted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. She was admitted in critical condition with trunk, external, arm and leg injuries.

The operator of the backhoe, Leaann Kessen, 46, of Crescent was not injured.

The trooper lists the cause of collision as inattentive.
