The Ponca City Wildcats will enter Jelsma Stadium on Friday night with a buzz surrounding their football program, but understand they will have their work cut out for them with a Guthrie team playing on their home turf.
The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM., streamed world-wide on both Guthrie Sports Page and Guthrie News Page websites along with the Tunein radio app.
The Wildcats enter The Rock coming off a 42-14 victory over the Enid Plainsmen last week after scoring on their first three possessions of the game.
Ponca is hoping they can continue their momentum in the 2015 season. In 2014, the Wildcats managed only a 3-7 record following a 0-10 campaign in 2013.
Third year head coach Josh Allen says not only is the team and coaches finally feeling momentum in their corner, but the town of Ponca City is also starting to feel the positive vibe.
A big part of the mind set in Kay County has been the addition of 6A II that allows more teams to qualify for the playoffs while playing on a more equal playing field.
The Wildcats return quarterback Conner Larson and recruited offensive lineman Jared Harvey. A season ago, Harvey was named the team’s offensive player of the year.
Larson, who had two rushing touchdowns against Enid, rushed for over 1,000 yards and 13 scores on the ground.
The Wildcat running game is aided by the quick Arita brothers (Dexter and Darrell).
Dexter Arita scored the first score last week while Dexter scampered off for a 61-yard run that led to a score in the second half against the Plainsmen.
On defense, defensive end Jared Kimble gives the Wildcats an edge on the defense while linebackers Austin Fry and Austin Hercyk give a punch up the middle. Hercyk had 88 stops last season while Fry added 34 more tackles.
