The Gary Boxley Invitational Track Meet is back for its second year on Wednesday, May 21, promising a full day of excitement, sportsmanship, and growing tradition for Guthrie’s fourth-grade students. Admission is just $5, with running events beginning at 9:30 a.m. and field events starting at 9:45 a.m.

Running events include the 100m dash, 4x100m and 4x200m relays, 400m, 200m, a co-ed 4x100m race, and the much-anticipated Fastest Teacher 100m Race. Field events will feature long jump, softball throw, and a crowd-favorite tug of war.

The meet was first introduced in 2023 to honor longtime track and field coach Gary Boxley, who remains a major influence in Guthrie athletics. It immediately became a beloved tradition.

Lesley Cotton, whose Cotteral boys were team champions in last year’s meet, reflected on the powerful impact:
“Cotteral students were so excited to participate in the first ever Gary Boxley Invitational… We started a tradition that will live on, and the pride on our students’ faces is something I’ll never forget.”

Central’s Dani Watson, coach of the girls’ team champions, echoed that sentiment: “For most of our students, this was their first sports competition, and it opened their eyes to what they are capable of — individually and as a team.”

Guthrie High School Head Track Coach Jake Jensen added, “The energy last year was incredible. And what makes it even more special is that we’re honoring Coach Boxley while he’s still actively involved. He lives and breathes this sport.”

With great competition, cheering fans, and a strong sense of community, this year’s meet is shaping up to be another unforgettable day for students, families, and coaches alike.
