GHS boys track team qualifies eight for State; Pruitt goes for gold

The Guthrie High School boys and girls track competed in the Class 5A regionals this past weekend in Choctaw this past with hopes of competing at this week’s state tournament in Moore.

After a day of intense competition the boy’s team was able to come away with eight state qualifiers while the Lady Jays came up just short.

In the field events, the Bluejays were led by senior Michael Pruitt, who qualified in both shot put and discus. The senior, who will play college football at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Okla., took the regional championship in the discus with a throw of 149’04. He came just short of the championship in the shot, but fell just shy.

Along with Pruitt, senior Alvis Wilcox qualified for State by taking third with a throw of 146’04.

Qualifying in field events are sophomore Payton Milner and junior Garrett Johnson. Milner finished fourth in the high jump while Johnson also finished fourth in the pole vault.

On the track, the Jays the were led by senior Tre Parker, who won the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.65. Parker  also anchored the 800 meter relay which finished second, qualifying for state. Other members of the relay team were seniors Carlos Owens, Ja’lyn Morgan, and Chance Whitt.

Owens qualified in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles winning the events.

Also placing at regionals was senior Chris Hopkins in the 400 meter dash, freshman Terrance Bibbs in the 100 meter dash, 3200 meter relay (Austin Flury, Chris Hopkins, Garrett Walters, Kris Grizzard), 400 meter relay ( C.J. Ward, Ja’lyn Morgan, Chance Whitt, Tre Parker) and the 1600 meter relay (Chance Whitt, Garrett Walters, Kris Grizzard, Chris Hopkins).
