The 2017 Cross Country State Championships will be well-represented by Guthrie High School teams after both qualifying with strong performances at regionals.
On Saturday, the Lady Jays squad captured second place while the Bluejays brought home a fifth place finish at the Class 5A regional in Norman.
Leading the way for the young Lady Jays team was Mercy Dement, who last week took the top individual spot in the Suburban Conference, finished fifth with a time of 21:00.
The regional individual champion was Guymon’s Gabby Ramon in 20:38.
Right behind Dement by a second was Allie Guggisberg at 21:01.
Next to come in for Guthrie was Tori Wells with an 11th place finish and was followed in by Sierra Warner (22nd) and Lauryn Downs (36th).
Elgin took the team title with a low score of 46 points. Guthrie was second with 80 and McGuinnes third with 88 team points.
For the Bluejays, they continue to be anchored by Trevor Sallee. The sophomore rounded out the top five with a run of 17:14 in the 5k race.
Guymon’s Dereje Himbago took the top spot in a time of 16:28.
The next runners to cross for the Jays was Rodrigo Solis (24th), James Coonfield (33rd), Loren Husky (34) and Harley Cunniff (71st).
The team title went to Guymon with 49 points.
Guthrie finished with 167 points.
Next for both teams will be the Class 5A state championship race, on Saturday, in Edmond.
