A Guthrie High School science teacher was named the Teacher of the Year by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Mid-Continent Section and was honored last week.
Eric Woodard was honored last Thursday with the award inside the Petroleum Club in Edmond.
The Oklahoma Geological Foundation Director, Terry Hollrah, said Woodard’s dedication to teaching Earth Sciences made him the right choice to receive the award.
Guthrie High School Principal Chris LeGrande, also a former science teacher, said Woodard has brought in nearly $30,000 in grants from the Oklahoma Geological Foundation for Guthrie students.
“We are very proud of Eric and his accomplishments,” LeGrande told Guthrie News Page.
Woodard, who is also well-known as one of the top defensive line football coaches in the state, received $5,000 while Guthrie High School received $1,000.
LeGrande said the money will be used to purchase resources for the science classrooms.
“Eric is to be commended and we wish him well as he will now be competing for National Teacher of the Year honors,” LeGrande concluded with.
Six teachers across the country are identified as finalists, each from one of six U.S. geographic regions (Pacific, Rocky Mountain, Mid-Continent, Southwest, Gulf Coast, and Eastern). After final nominations are decided, the TOTY Committee will convene to pick the final winner of the Teacher of the Year Award.
