Guthrie High School Peyton Hayes was recently awarded one of the largest awards a senior could ever ask for. A full-ride scholarship for a four-year college education.
“I am delighted to be awarded the Gates Scholarship. I’m still in shock,” Hayes said. “I am honored with every opportunity I get to represent Guthrie.”
Over 50,000 applicants across the U.S. applied for the prestigious scholarship with only 750 coming away with the honor.
“No one deserves this more than you,” Peyton’s fourth-grade teacher Nancy Bradley said. “You work hard at everything you do. I could tell as a 4th grader you had special talents. Smart, determined, and most of all the kindest heart of any person! You are going to do great things with your life! Love you, and so proud of you.”
Not many can match her enthusiasm for her school, classmates, and town. She participates heavily in school functions and athletics.
“My class has a lot who are next level academically, athletically, and in leadership/service. They’ve been a big influence on me.”
Hayes says the application process was long and thorough but was worth the time and effort.
She thanked her teachers, Blair Workman and Lori Lucas, and counselor Annie Chadd for their dedication toward her accomplishments.
