GHS slow pitch battling tough competition as season progresses

The Guthrie Lady Jays slow-pitch softball team is holding strong with a 7-5 record in Class 5A, the second-largest classification in the state.

It was a grueling week for the team, playing seven games over three days, including four matchups against Class 6A opponents. Despite the challenge, the Lady Jays showed resilience, battling in every game and refusing to back down. Three of their five losses have come against 6A teams, and they currently hold a 1-1 record against 5A competition.

The team showcased solid pitching performances from Halle Hamilton and Saylor Hamilton, while power hitters Ava Hebensperger, Codi Hibbs, Kassie Hall, and Savannah Ingle provided crucial home runs.

Improved hitting from Shelbey Smedley, Kaya Wheeler, Kylee Edge, Dakota Cherry, and Micah Countess contributed to the team’s offensive strength. Defensively, the Lady Jays continued to show great effort, highlighted by standout catches in centerfield from Ava Hebensperger.

“Every game prepares us for the playoffs,” head coach Kara Tarrant said.

Codi Hibbs had an impressive week at the plate, hitting .600 with 12 singles, one double, one triple, and a home run.

The Lady Jays now hit the road for their next four games, starting with a matchup against Class 4A Tonkawa on Monday. They return home on April 15 to host Drummond.
