Golfers rally in afternoon session to win Southern Invitational

The Guthrie High School boy’s golf team traveled to Duncan for the Justin Crook Southern Oklahoma Invitational on Thursday.  The stroke-play event featured 18 holes in the morning with another 18 played in the afternoon.

The tournament featured perennial 5A golf powers, including defending state champion Bishop McGuinness, state runner-up Piedmont, Bishop Kelley, Duncan and several others.

Coach Ric Meshew is left standing with the winning bracket and plaque in Duncan.

The morning 18 featured Guymon’s Greyson Wallace shooting an incredible 65, which vaulted the Tigers into the lead with a team score of 306.

The Bluejays were paced in the morning by freshman Bo Robbins with a team best 77, followed closely by fellow freshman Luke Morgan’s 78, senior Jarrott Gates with a 79, freshman Luke Roach at 80 and sophomore Luke Dale with an 89.

That left the Jays at 314 trailing Guymon, McGuinness and Tulsa Kelley.

The young Bluejay squad came out hitting on all cylinders in the afternoon round, improving nearly across the board to make up all the ground they needed and then some.

Roach did an about-face from his morning round and posted a 72. Robbins turned in a nearly identical 76 and Morgan posted a 75. Gates improved by two strokes by turning in a 77 and Dale matched his morning with an 89.  The top four scores totaled 300 and gave Guthrie the championship with the low score of 614 edging Guymon by three shots.

Wallace, Guymon’s two bag, was stellar and finished as the tournament winner with a 137.

The Southern Invitational only provided hardware for the top five in individual scoring, which Guthrie was not represented in. Roach finished with a team best 152 score, followed closely by Robbins and Morgan’s 153 and Gates was not far behind with a 156.

The Jays are back in action Monday at Kingfisher in a Maxwell Format event, where they will compete together as a team to post a group score on each hole.
