The Guthrie Police Department and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office will participate in a Memorial Mile Run in honor of Edmond’s Sgt. CJ Nelson of the Edmond Police Department. Nelson lost his life in the line of duty.
The 38-year-old officer was killed in a five-vehicle crash last week when he was sitting at a red light when a white truck allegedly failed to stop at the light and crashed into Nelson and three other vehicles on Broadway Ext. in Edmond.
The memorial run will begin at 6 p.m. Monday evening, at the Guthrie High School track. The public will join Guthrie officers and Logan County deputies for a mile run in Nelson’s honor.
“We will be doing this run at the same time “Running 4 Heroes” will have an event in Florida,” Guthrie Lieutenant Mark Bruning said. “This isn’t a race it’s a run to remember and reflect.”
With temperatures expected to be at or near triple digits, firefighters from the Guthrie Fire Department will be on standby in case they are needed at the track.
“As my friend Dr. (Bill) Warden says, ‘nobody fights alone.’ We will fight through the heat and show our support,” Bruning said.
Bruning added, “This is a free event open to the public, not just law enforcement. Again, we know it will be hot but it’s a small price to pay. The Nelson family’s loss is forever. The City of Edmond Police Department’s loss is forever. We can come together as one and show what we are made of as a community. Other communities are invited to come out. Run, walk cheer, hand out water, pray, and cry.”
All donations will be sent directly to the Nelson Family.
