GPS administrator named new superintendent for Hinton Public Schools

Guthrie Public Schools Executive Director John Hancock has been named the new superintendent of Hinton Public Schools, marking the next chapter in a distinguished 25-year career in education. Hancock, who joined the Guthrie administration in June 2023, was selected to lead the Hinton district as it embarks on several major transitions.

Hancock originally stepped into his role at Guthrie following the departure of Doug Ogle, who left to lead Perkins-Tryon Public Schools. Before his tenure in Guthrie, Hancock served as the high school principal at Washington Public Schools. His extensive administrative background also includes six years as an assistant principal at both the junior high and high school levels within the Mid-Del Public Schools system.

A veteran educator, Hancock’s classroom experience spans two states, with previous teaching assignments in Newcastle, Oologah, and Putnam City, as well as a three-year stint in Anderson County, Kansas.

Guthrie Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson praised Hancock’s contributions to the district and his readiness for the top leadership role. “He has been a loyal member of our team for the past three years, and his professional growth has been phenomenal,” Dr. Simpson said. “Hinton is getting a solid leader ready to do great things!”

Hancock arrives in Hinton at a pivotal time for the district.

Last October, Hinton voters approved a $5.98 million bond issue designated for essential building repairs and infrastructure upgrades, including asbestos removal. In addition to overseeing these capital improvements, Hancock will be tasked with stabilizing the athletic department; the Class A Comets are currently searching for a new head football coach following an 0-10 season and the departure of former coach Josh Cooper to Casady.

Despite the challenges ahead, Hancock expressed a clear focus on community and culture as he prepares to take the helm. “I’m most excited about the opportunity to build relationships with students, staff, and the community while continuing the great work already happening,” Hancock said.
