Video: Grace Mungai named Student of the Month for GPS

While students were sleeping in during the teacher strike, Grace Mungai was at the State Capitol supporting her teachers and learning how the legislative process worked.

Guthrie Public Schools and Foundation Insurance teamed up and found the latest school district’s student of the month. On Monday evening, Grace was the latest winner to be announced at the Board of Education meeting.

Blake Wimsey with Foundation Insurance introduced Grace, a seventh grade student at Guthrie Junior High School.

She was nominated by high school history teacher Kim Barrett.

“Grace has a generous heart and curious mind. She ensues the truth spirit of a Bluejay,” Barrett said in her letter.

Barrett added that Grace brought baked goods for teachers while they stood for Oklahoma education. Grace also went into the Capitol and listened to the legislative meetings.

Although there are no specific grade requirements, the student must be in good-standing in the classroom to be eligible. Overall, the district says they are searching for students who go above and beyond in the way they treat their peers and teachers.

Wimsey congratulated Mungai and presented her with a $65 gift certificate to Stacy’s Place.
