Guthrie airport receives grant for runway lighting

The Guthrie city council approved a resolution last week accepting a grant from the Federal Aviation Association for $48,510 for the design only of rehabilitation of runway lighting on Runway 1634.

A construction grant will follow in Fiscal Year 2017.

Currently, the existing incandescent lights on the runway have been costly to repair, operate and maintain and the existing 10-15 year-old lines have wiring that has degraded.

When runway lights are out of service, it is unsafe for pilots to land, rendering the runway unusable until repairs are made.

Rehabilitation will include installation of LED bulbs, which are much longer lasting, less expensive to operate, and need less frequent – and less expensive – repairs.

The grants that are expected to fund the majority of the project, the total cost for the City of Guthrie is estimated to be under $20,000. Usually, project costs of this type exceeds $350,000.
