The Guthrie BlueJay football program has enjoyed a perfect 8-0 season to date, but the Jays will be fully tested from this point forward, including Friday night’s Halloween showdown with the Carl Albert Titans.
No doubt, the Jays are more interested in winning a key district game that will help decide the first three spots of the district, but will also look to add to their school records.
Guthrie (8-0) has tied a school record of 22 consecutive wins dating back to 2013. The BlueJays have also won a school record 32 straight games inside Jelsma Stadium dating back to 2009.
And you know the Titans will not be intimidated by any means when they settle in for the 7 p.m. kick. The game will be televised by Cox Communications (channel 3 and 703).
Carl Albert (6-2) is coming off an emotional loss to Deer Creek (34-33) for their lone district loss. The Titans will look to keep their first round home playoff game in tact with a win over Guthrie.
With no surprise, the Titans will depend on their running game that is led by running back Dillon Lohr. The senior, who a season ago played as a wide receiver, averages 117 yards. The athletic back showed his ability to make plays when he completed a half-back pass for 33-yards last week for a touchdown. Defensively, he has added 25 tackles.
Aiding in the Titans running game, that averages 276 yards per game, is quarterback Braxton Dickerson. The six-foot-three junior displays a strong arm and nearly 800 yards. Perhaps, more dangerous running the ball as he averages over 80-yards per game.
What the Titans do best will match up exactly what Guthrie does the best – stop the run.
The BlueJays defense has shut-out their opponents in 25 of the 32 quarters played and are holding them to less than a touchdown (6.5) per game.
Guthrie has been able to control the running games with defensive ends L’liott Curry and Jaron Pryor on the edge, linebacker Beau Davis up the middle and Kelyn Hinds in the secondary. Davis leads the team in tackles with 78, Curry has a team best 12 sacks while Hinds has collected four interceptions.
Meanwhile, the Guthrie offense has not been too shabby themselves when it comes to running the football. The offense is averaging 253 yards per game and in the process is averaging nearly 43 points a contest.
Highlighting the rush attack is senior Idae Alexander, who enters as the number two running back in Class 5A when it comes to yards per game. Alexander has added up 1,288 yards in 2014 and needs just one yard to go over 3,000 career yards.
Carl Albert leads series 21-20
Guthrie is riding a four-game winning streak in the series and a win would not only tie the overall series at 21, but would match the Guthrie teams from 1970-74 to win five straight. Carl Albert won six straight games twice (1975-80 and 1985-90).
Since 2001, Guthrie has the advantage in the series at 9-4 and are 5-2 in the same time period at home.
