Just to be labeled as an All-State athlete is a honor in Oklahoma athletics, but Guthrie athletes stood out in this year’s game.
Micayla Haynes, a four-year starter for the Lady Jays basketball program, played in her final high school game as she represented team West.
The large school East team took down West, 74-62.
Haynes, who play college basketball at Arkansas Fort Smith, finished with seven points and several assists while contributing on the defensive side. Related article: Micayla Haynes signs to play college basketball with UAFS
On the final day of the games, JaRon Pryor and Chance Whitt suited up one last time on the high school gridiron.
Pryor, who was named District 5A-2’s First Team Athlete of the Year after finishing his senior season with 49 tackles and five sacks, caused havoc on the defensive side the entire evening. The Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Norseman got to the quarterback for a sack.
Whitt, who was an alternate to the all-state game, was able to suit up and did he prove he deserved to be among the elite.
Whitt, also a Norseman, scored the game’s first score of the night by hauling in a touchdown reception on a trick play.
The next score from the West came from Cashion’s Blakely Liebman on a short run.
However, the East squad, who was coached by former Bluejay head coach Rafe Watkins, scored late in the fourth quarter to tie the game.
Team West was able to drive the field and with a second left called timeout from their 39-yard line.
Whitt lined up in the middle of trips receivers and took off for the end zone. Duncan quarterback Luke Ring escaped the pocket and threw a dart to Whitt in the end zone with no time left on the clock.
Touchdown.
West players quickly dashed to Whitt to celebrate the win. See the video below this article.
“I’m just very fortunate to get to be here,” he told The Oklahoman after the game. “I’m just glad the way things turned out.”
Before the heroics of Whitt, Jillian Chappell was named the All-State Queen. Chappell will attend Oklahoma State University.
