The Guthrie Bluejays started their season with two five inning, run-rule district wins over the Northwest Classen Knights on Monday afternoon at Squires Field.
In game one, Guthrie scored four runs in the each of the first two innings en route to a 13-0 win. In game two, the Jays scored 18 runs on 12 hits in the first inning alone before finishing with a 21-2 win.
Guthrie (2-0, 2-0) received complete game performances on the mound from sophomore Evan Kowalski (1-0) and senior Zane Maltz (1-0). NW Classen drops to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in district play.
Kowalski baffled NW Classen batters throughout the day by striking out 12 and allowing just one hit.
Junior lead-off hitter, Tyler Kisner, reached base all four times he came up to the plate while adding three singles. Jeremiah Blackmon followed Kisner’s lead by going 3-for-3. The senior second baseman added three RBIs.
Maltz and Kowalski added multiple hits with Kowalski adding two RBIs. Senior Rowdy Reihs finished with a game high three RBIs.
First inning breaks game wide-open
Guthrie sent 22 batters to the plate in the first inning, which brought home 18 runs. Knights starting pitcher tossed 84 pitches in the half-inning that took 36 minutes to play.
Maltz, who took the mound with an 18-0 lead, finished with 9 strikeouts in his first outing since his sophomore season. Due to an injury, Maltz was unable to pitch a season ago.
Senior Braden Davenport led all Jays in game two by going 5-for-5.
Senior Camden Wilcott reached base in his five at bats, including four hits and four runs scored. Kisner finished the game with three hits and finished the day by going 6-for-7 in the double-header with six singles.
Kowalski had the longest hit when he drilled a Knights pitch over the right-center field fence for a first inning solo shot.
As a team, Guthrie finished with 19 hits and 31 total hits in the twinbill.
