Guthrie Baseball goes 2-2 against Arizona competition during spring break trip

While winter-like conditions lingered back home, the Guthrie High School baseball team traded in the cold for the Arizona desert, competing in a spring break tournament against top-level competition.

The Bluejays departed last Saturday morning on a charter bus and returned home Thursday morning after playing four games against Class 6A programs, finishing with a 2-2 record. The Jays played Willow Canyon, Pinnacle, and Sunrise Mountain high schools.

One of the highlights came on Tuesday when Guthrie knocked off Arizona’s defending Class 5A state champions, Centennial High School, 9-3.

Junior Daelon Rice delivered a complete-game performance, allowing just three runs—two earned—over seven innings. At the plate, Rice also contributed with a 2-for-3 outing and three RBIs, while sophomore Easton Smedley went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Later that same day, Guthrie earned another win with a 12-7 victory over Willow Canyon. Senior Maddox Vaughan led the offense with two hits, a run scored, and four RBIs. On the mound, senior Owen Wilder picked up the win after pitching five and two-thirds innings.

Beyond the games, the trip offered valuable experiences off the field. On Sunday evening, the Bluejays attended a spring training matchup between the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The following morning, the team got an up-close look at the Texas Rangers during a practice session, observing pitchers, infielders, and outfielders as they went through drills.

On Tuesday evening, the Bluejays were back in the stands to watch another spring training game featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals.

The spring break trip was approved by the Guthrie Board of Education and funded through the Guthrie Booster Club, along with fundraising efforts by the team.

The Bluejays will take some time off before getting back into district play on Monday with Southeast.

The Jays are 7-5 overall and 3-1 in District 5A-I.
