Our Guthrie Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously supports the Guthrie School Bond Proposal and encourages all registered voters to vote “YES” on Tuesday, May 12 for the sake of our children and our community. This school bond issue is about whether our community is willing to invest in a solid future. It is about valuing our children. It is about showing them that their education and future is important. Polls are open 7 a.m. – 7p.m on the 12th, with early and absentee voting on Thursday and Friday, May 7 and 8, at the Election Board at 224 E. Vilas from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. No matter what your vote, if you require a ride to the polls please contact us at 405 282-1947 and we will arrange transportation for you.
There will be two public forums to discuss the bond election. We hope that you will attend one or both of them in order to better understand what is being proposed and what is at stake. The first forum is sponsored by the Guthrie Chamber of Commerce and will be held on May 4 at the Territorial Capitol Sports Museum located at 315 W. Oklahoma in Guthrie. The second forum is sponsored by the Logan County Economic Development Council and will be held on May 7 at the Lazy E Arena Cantina located at 9600 Lazy E Drive in rural Guthrie. Both forums will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the public is invited.
The bond will begin to address the two main impediments to growth in Guthrie. One is the lack of a qualified workforce and the other is the impression that we just don’t care about our school system. Both of these issues would be resolved with an increased investment in our children. Doing repairs to buildings will not solve all of the District’s problems, but it is the most logical place to start. The apparent lack of concern by the community for our children is damaging to our children and to our overall economic future.
With upgraded and enhanced access to technology and resources our young people will be able to prepare themselves to be part of an increasingly specialized work force. Right now they are being asked to compete in a job market with skills that have been honed on cast off computers and obsolete technology. Work force development must be a priority for Guthrie Schools if we are to attract new businesses and development.
When a company looks for a place to open a new business, build a factory, or expand, one of the first factors they check is the quality of the schools that they will be asking their employees to be a part of. When a family decides to relocate to another town, one of the most important factors is whether their children will have access to a quality education in a sound learning environment.
With the passing of this bond they will see that Guthrie values our children, our community, and our future. Working together for positive growth and progress.
One Plan – Rather than piecemeal fixes, a positive, comprehensive plan to solve overcrowded classrooms and critical maintenance issues. It’s more than a Band‐Aid; it’s a long term plan of action.
One Purpose – Guthrie’s children deserve the best education possible. We all know school buildings don’t educate kids, but decaying, over‐crowded buildings do get in the way of learning. Our purpose is to enhance the learning environment for all of our students
One District – We aren’t “north” or “south”, or “old Guthrie” or “suburban Guthrie.” Together we are One Guthrie School District that serves ALL OF OUR CHILDREN!
VOTE YES. VOTE FOR OUR CHILDREN. VOTE FOR OUR FUTURE.
