The City of Guthrie is now accepting applications to fill the recently vacated Ward 1 City Council seat after the council formally accepted the resignation of Councilman Jim Case during Tuesday night’s meeting.
The decision to vacate the position passed with a unanimous 5-0 vote. Mayor Steve Gentling was absent due to a family situation.
Councilman Case’s resignation came in the wake of a social comment he made regarding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Related article: Councilman resigns after controversial comment following assassination attempt on former President Trump
The council spent nearly 20 minutes deliberating on the best course of action to fill the vacancy, ultimately deciding to open the application window for seven days, ending on August 14, 2024, at 5 p.m.
Qualified candidates who wish to represent Ward 1 on the Guthrie City Council are encouraged to apply.
After the application window closes, the City Council will review all submissions and hold a special workshop session on Tuesday, August 20th at 6 p.m. to interview the applicants. The council may appoint a new council member during this workshop or at the regular meeting, which will follow immediately after.
The appointed individual will serve the remainder of the current term, from August 20, 2024, through May 5, 2025. Applicants must meet several qualifications, including being a U.S. citizen, a resident of Guthrie for at least two years, and a registered voter residing in Ward 1.
