Guthrie city manager accepts job in Texas

Guthrie City Manager Sereniah Breland is leaving after less than three years to take a city manager position near Houston.

Breland informed City staff and council members she is resigning her post effective June 7. Breland has accepted a similar position in Alvin, Texas.

On Thursday evening, the Alvin city council unanimously selected Breland for their top spot after the position opened in July 2014. She’s expected to take her new position on June 15.

Alvin is a suburb of Houston and has a population of 25,000.

“I appreciate the opportunities that the City has offered me during my tenure since October of 2012, and wish the City much success in the future,” Breland said in a letter to the mayor and council members.

Breland replaced Matt Mueller, who accepted a similar position in Little Elm (Tx).

The Guthrie city council is expected to approve Breland’s resignation in a special meeting on Tuesday, May 12. The council will also consider hiring an interim manager while seeking a permanent.

The Alvin city council spent several minutes in executive session before making the approval. In addition, the council approved $10,000 in moving expenses and $1,500 for temporary housing for six months. No other details were disclosed, but Guthrie News Page has learned Breland agreed to a three-year deal.

Prior to coming to Guthrie, Breland served positions in Texas, including city manager for Goliad,  support services director in Sugar Land, recycling coordinator in Denton and assistant to the city manager in Greenville.
