Guthrie coaching legend Willie Young passes away

Guthrie is mourning the loss of a long-time coach and educator Willie Young, who passed away late Sunday evening due to ongoing health issues. He was 65.

Young was an educator for Guthrie Public School for 28 years beginning in 1975.

He was simply known by everyone as “Coach Young” not only in Guthrie, but around the state.

Young coached several sports throughout his career at the junior high and high school level for the Bluejays. He also served as an athletic director primarily at Guthrie Junior High.

Baseball was his love. In 2011, he was inducted into the Sunbelt Classic Hall of Fame for his many years of coaching elite baseball players from around the state.

Coach is survived by his wife, Gladys, his three children (Kendall, Shannon and Shavon) and four grandchildren.

Funeral services for Willie “Coach” Young will be Saturday morning at 11 am inside Community Church (I-35 & Seward Rd).
