Guthrie continued its strong start to the season with another complete performance in all three phases of the game, rolling past Blanchard 48-7 Friday night inside Jelsma Stadium.
The Bluejay defense stole the spotlight with five takeaways, including three interceptions from Skylor Scamman, Dereon Whitehorn, and Rowan McHone. McHone’s interception turned into a highlight moment as he raced 61 yards for a Pick 6 — the only score in the second half.
Guthrie’s defense limited the Lions to just 144 total yards, a week after Blanchard quarterback Noah Smith threw for nearly 500 yards against Newcastle.
Senior defensive lineman Mason Russell delivered two game-changing plays of his own, returning a fumble 13 yards for a touchdown and recovering another loose ball later in the game.
Special teams also shined, highlighted by junior Codie Carlock’s 57-yard punt return that set up an 11-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Daelon Rice to tight end Owen Wilder.
Rice was nearly perfect through the air, completing 9 of 11 passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Wilder hauled in two of those scores, while Amare Watson added two touchdowns of his own — a 2-yard run and a 40-yard reception that opened the scoring.
Head coach Kelly Beeby praised his team’s balance. “I thought we threw the ball well tonight. We had some big throws and catches,” Beeby said. “Our kids were physical and took their coaching tonight, but we still have a lot of work to do, and the kids know it.”
Guthrie led 41-7 at halftime and never looked back, improving to 2-1 on the year. Blanchard fell to 1-2 after being limited to just one touchdown, a stark contrast to their offensive explosion last week.
The Jays will return to Jelsma Stadium next Friday for Homecoming against John Marshall, their third and final straight home game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with the GNP TV pregame show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
