Guthrie dominates Norman Tournament with four convincing wins; home game on Monday

The Guthrie Lady Jays softball team snapped their three-game losing streak in spectacular fashion, sweeping through the Norman Veteran Bat Invitational with four dominant wins against Class 5A Noble, 4A Newcastle, and 6A programs Norman and Norman North.

Averaging eight runs per game, the Lady Jays showcased their offensive power, a stark contrast to last week’s struggles where they averaged under three runs per game across four contests.

Brylan Shephard stole the spotlight on Saturday against Norman with three home runs and another against Norman North, bringing her season total to six.

In their opening game against Noble, the Lady Jays delivered a resounding 13-2 victory, led by Haley Gallo’s five RBIs, including a three-run homer in the fourth inning.

Guthrie kept the momentum going against Newcastle, overcoming an early deficit to win 5-2, with Ava Hebensperger’s bases-clearing triple leading the way.

The tournament finale saw Shephard’s bat explode as she powered Guthrie to a 9-5 win over Norman with three home runs, driving in five runs.

The Jays were scheduled to play Elgin in the finals, but with both teams playing in District 5A-1 and with a crucial district game on Aug. 29 they were allowed to play other teams.

Guthrie accumulated 10 hits in a 5-1 win over Norman North with Gallo, Shephard, and Savannah Ingle each collecting two hits. Gallo and Shephard each drove in two runs.

Guthrie’s pitching staff also shone throughout the tournament, with solid performances from Ingle (1-1), Kinley Duehning (3-0), and Holland McLemore (1-2).

The Lady Jays will finally play on their home soil as they host Carl Albert (2-1) in a non-district game on Monday at 5 p.m.

Guthrie 13, Noble 2

Gallo drove in five runs on three hits to lead Guthrie past Noble 13-2 on Friday. Gallo hit a home run,her second of the season, to center field in the fourth inning, scoring three runs, and doubled in the second inning, scoring two.

Guthrie got on the board in the top of the first inning after Ingle grounded out, and Brylan Shephard singled, each scoring one run.

Jays added to their early lead in the top of the second inning when Gallo doubled, scoring two runs, and Ingle singled, scoring one run.

Guthrie added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Emalyn Redman singled, Codi Hibbs doubled, and Saylor Hamilton singled, each scoring one run.

Five more Guthrie runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 13-1. Redman singled, scoring one run, Hibbs singled, scoring one run, and Gallo homered to center field, scoring three runs.

Ingle earned the win for the Lady Jays. The right-handed pitcher surrendered four hits and two runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out four and walking none.

Guthrie collected 13 hits in the game. Gallo and Hamilton were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected three hits for Guthrie. Shephard, Redman, and Hibbs each collected multiple hits.

Noble falls to 5-3 on the season.

Guthrie 5, Newcastle 2

Newcastle (0-3) got on the board in the top of the first inning with two runs, including a home run.

Guthrie made the score 5-2 in the bottom of the third after Hebensperger tripled, scoring three runs, and Duehning singled, scoring one run.

Duehning earned the win for Guthrie. The lefty surrendered eight hits and two runs over six innings, striking out two and walking one.

Hebensperger provided three runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-2 on the day. Duehning and Hebensperger each collected two hits.

Guthrie 9, Norman 5

Shephard hit three home runs and drove in five as Guthrie defeated Norman 9-5 on Saturday. Shephard homered in the second, third, and fifth innings.

Norman (2-2) was the first to get on the board in the first when Marcela Attar doubled, scoring two runs.

Shephard homered to center field, which helped tie the game at two in the top of the second.

Guthrie captured the lead, 6-2, in the top of the third when Hebensperger tripled, scoring one run, Duehning singled, scoring one run, and Shephard homered to left field, scoring two runs.

Guthrie added to their lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning thanks to home runs by Shephard and Ingle.

McLemore earned the win by giving up only three hits and four runs over three innings, striking out one and walking five. Duehning collected the save.

Guthrie collected 12 hits in the game. Duehning, Ingle, and Hebensperger each collected multiple hits for the Lady Jays.

Guthrie 5, Norman North 1

Norman got on the scoreboard in the first inning. That would be the only time as Guthrie scored five unanswered runs to take down another Class 6A program on Saturday.

Trialing 1-0, Guthrie scored two runs in the top of the third after Saige Driscoll grounded out, and Haley Gallo tripled, each scoring one run.

Brylan Shephard homered to center field, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth for the Lady Jays.

Kinley Duehning earned the win in the circle. The starting pitcher allowed three hits and one run over five innings, striking out two and walking one.

Guthrie accumulated 10 hits in the game with Gallo, Shephard, and Savannah Ingle each collected two hits. Gallo and Shephard each drove in two runs.
