Guthrie dominates Western Heights in 72-0 blowout

The Guthrie Bluejays made quick work of a depleted Western Heights team Friday night, cruising to a 72-0 victory. With only 15 suited players, the Jets struggled to keep up as the Bluejays soared to their fourth straight win.

Guthrie, now 5-2 overall and 4-0 in District 5A-2, saw contributions from 10 different players in the scoring column.

The game started with a bang when junior Clayton Carpenter returned the opening kickoff to the Jets’ 14-yard line. On the very next play, senior Kolten Carlock punched in the game’s first touchdown, setting the tone for the night.

Surprisingly, that would be the only offensive snap for the Bluejays in the first quarter. The defense took over from there, with sophomore Skylor Scamman intercepting a pass for a pick-six, and seniors Kaiden White and Eli Plagg each returning fumbles for touchdowns, all in the opening quarter.

By halftime, Guthrie had extended their lead to 47-0 after adding three more scores in the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Daelon Rice ran in a 22-yard touchdown, junior Zane Thomas found the end zone on a 4-yard run, and senior Blake Doles hauled in a 67-yard touchdown reception.

In the second half, Guthrie piled on five more scores, including two safeties. Freshman Elijah Payne and sophomore Qadri Muhammad each added rushing touchdowns, while Carpenter capped off the dominant performance with a 52-yard punt return for a touchdown.

The Bluejays will look to keep their momentum going when they travel to Altus for another road test this Friday night.
