Fans got free baseball on Tuesday, as Piedmont needed 10 innings to halt a Guthrie six-game winning streak with a 9-5 win inside Squires Field.
With the win, Piedmont and Guthrie are tied for third place in the district standings with 3-1 records. Overall, Piedmont improves to 6-4 while Guthrie falls to 8-2.
The Jays jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with a RBI double from Tyler Kisner. The hit scored Zane Maltz, who started the inning with a double of his own.
Piedmont responded with three runs in the fifth inning to go up 3-1.
Guthrie responded in their fifth inning with four runs on four hits, including three extra base hits.
Camden Wilcott drilled a one-out double and later scored on a RBI single from Jeremiah Blackmon. Next, it was Maltz delivering a RBI double. Highlighting the inning was Braden Davenport’s two-run homerun over the left field wall to give the Jays a 5-3 advantage.
Piedmont would scrap across a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to tie the game, 5-5, sending it to extra innings.
In the 10th, Piedmont scored four runs, including a three-run homerun Noah Ellis, who also picked up the win on the mound for the Wildcats.
Guthrie returns to Squires Field for a 5 p.m. first pitch with Jones.
