The Guthrie-Edmond Regional Airport will temporarily close its single runway, Runway 16/34, beginning Thursday, January 15, 2026, to allow for critical improvements as part of the airport’s Parallel Taxiway Reconstruction Project.
The closure, expected to last approximately six weeks (weather permitting), will suspend all fixed-wing flight operations during construction. Helicopter operations will continue in limited areas coordinated through airport management.
According to Airport Director Caden Young, the closure is necessary to safely complete work within the Runway Safety Area (RSA) — a federally protected zone surrounding the runway designed to enhance operational safety.
“This project has been in planning for more than a decade,” Young said. “Once completed, it will improve efficiency and position the airport for future growth.”
The taxiway reconstruction, which began on August 11 remains on schedule for completion by Spring 2026. The $5.7 million project will realign about 3,750 feet of non-standard taxiway, bringing the airfield into full compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design standards and improving long-term operational efficiency.
Funding for the project comes primarily from the FAA, which is covering 90% of the cost. The Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA) is contributing 5%, with the remaining 5% jointly funded by the Cities of Guthrie and Edmond.
Pilots are encouraged to monitor FAA Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) for updates on closures and reopenings.
Home to more than 130 based aircraft and numerous aviation businesses, the Guthrie-Edmond Regional Airport contributes approximately $19.2 million annually to the local economy.
