Guthrie eliminates Woodward from playoffs; Jays look to clinch in Guymon

For the second straight season the Guthrie Bluejays eliminated the playoff hopes for Woodward. Now, the Jays are looking to secure a win in week 10 to capture their 13^th straight playoff berth.

Guthrie traveled to Woodward on Friday and came away with a 28-3 win. The Jays need one more win in Guymon next week to qualify for the playoffs.

After a scoreless first quarter, Guthrie scored three times in the second quarter and never looked back on the scoreboard.

Senior running back Gavin Brison and junior quarterback Jackson Waddell piled up majority of the 327 yards of offense.

Brison finished with 165 yards on 18 carries and Waddell added 98 yards on 15 carries.

Brison started the scoring with a 14-yard run that was setup by his own 70-yard run on the previous play.

Waddell was next to score with a 40-yard run up the middle to push the score 14-0.

Next, Waddell found Marcellous Owens on a 29-yard pass with just seven seconds left in the half.

The final Jays score came on the opening second half kickoff when CJ Ward made several moves and cuts to go 90 yards.

Guthrie improves to 4-5 overall and more importantly 3-3 in district play. Woodward falls to 3-6 and will conclude their season at Carl Albert.

Speaking of Carl Albert, the Titans defeated Piedmont on Friday and now allows Guthrie to control their own playoff destiny in Guymon.

A win and the Jays are in the playoffs with a trip to Ardmore.

Piedmont, who travels to McGuinness, still has a heartbeat to edge the Jays for the final playoff spot. The Wildcats would need a win over the Irish and a Jays loss to Guymon to qualify. If both Guthrie and Piedmont win or both lose, the Jays would move on with the head-to-head tie breaker.

The last time the Jays failed to qualify for postseason play came after an injured riddled 2004 season.
