There are three phases in the game of football and the top-ranked Guthrie BlueJays used all three en route to their 17th consecutive win Friday evening inside Jelsma Stadium.
And for the first time, Guthrie trailed for the first time, although that lasted for just 14 seconds as the BlueJays outscored 6A Enid 49-26 to improve to 3-0. Meanwhile, Enid drops their first game and are 2-1.
The BlueJay offense took advantage of senior quarterback Bryan Dutton’s three rushing touchdowns and Donovan Jordan’s 65-yard reverse. The BlueJay defense for the second week in a row got a pick six from senior defensive end Richard Brothers and the BlueJay special teams got a Jordan 59-yard punt return, J.T. McFadden 90-yard kick return and Luis Morales was a perfect six-for-six on extra points.

For the third straight week, Guthrie jumped out to an early lead with a Dutton 46-yard score and Jordan’s punt return to give the home team a 14-0 lead just 3:17 into the contest, but that’s when the Seth Handley show began for the Plainsmen.
The next three Plainsmen possession resulted in one-play drives with Handley going 86 and 53 yards for big scores. Sandwiched in between that was a Chance Pryor 64-yard bomb to Alex Lofton for the score and Enid quickly had an 18-14 lead. After missing the extra point on the first touchdown, the Plainsmen were unsuccessful at both two-point conversions.
Handley “Popeye” finished with a game high 214 rushing yards, but was kept in check after dashing the BlueJay defense for 149 yards on the two touchdown carries alone.
After Handley’s second score, the Plainsmen elected to kick deep for the first time and the next thing they saw was McFadden speeding by for the 9o-yard score to finish the first quarter scoring blitz with the Jays leading 21-18.
After an Enid fumble, Guthrie put together a second drive of seven plays covering 47 yards and capped off by a 1-yard run by Dutton.
On the following possession, it appeared Enid was back on the board with another Hadley long run, but was called back on a penalty and later on the drive Handley fumbled the ball to the Jays, who took advantage of the miscue just before the half.
Out of a time-out, Guthrie faced a third down and 17 and drew up the perfect play call with the reverse with Jordan, who made several nice cuts, but the play went back thanks to a big block from Brothers to free up the speedy Jordan.
The game seem to turn at that moment with 1:15 left before halftime and Guthrie leading 35-18.
The dagger for Enid came midway in the third quarter when Brothers stepped in front of a pass and took off down field for the 68-yard pick six.
Dutton finished just 3-of-11 for 17 yards, but was heroic on the ground with 21 carries for 138 yards to go with the three scores. Jordan, McFadden and junior Tre Smith combined for 14 carries and 125 yards rushing.
Guthrie begins district play next week when they entertain Guymon for Homecoming 2012. Enid travels to Bartlesville.
