Guthrie Fire Department achieves Class 2 insurance rate

(Guthrie, OK) The City of Guthrie is proud to announce that the Guthrie Fire Department has achieved a Class 2 Public Protection Classification (PPC) from the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The city was recently notified that after an extensive grading process, the fire department improved on its previous rating of 4, reducing it to a 2.

“Our department is proud of the quality service it provides to our citizens and this improved ISO rating is evidence of our commitment to our community,” said Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow. “This achievement is the culmination of several years of work to improve the quality of services in our department,” Harlow added.

This improved classification puts the Guthrie Fire Department in the top 3% of fire departments nationwide.

The ISO’s Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS) is a manual containing the criteria ISO utilizes in reviewing the fire prevention and fire suppression capabilities of individual communities or fire protection areas. The schedule measures the major elements of a community’s fire protection system and develops a numerical grading called a Public Protection Classification. The PPC grading scale is between 1 and 10, with 1 being the best and 10 being no fire protection.

The FSRS employs nationally accepted standards developed by organizations such as the National Fire Protection Association, the American Water Works Association and the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials International. The PPC program always provides a useful benchmark that helps fire departments and other public officials measure the effectiveness of their efforts, as well as plan future improvements.  The FSRS considers three main areas of a community’s fire suppression system: emergency communications, fire department and water supply. In addition, it includes a Community Risk Reduction section that recognizes community efforts to reduce fire loss through fire prevention, public fire safety education and fire investigation.

Harlow further commented, “We are grateful to our City Council and City Administration for the funding and assistance they’ve provided to help make the needed improvements in our department. This new grade will benefit the entire city and we are proud to complete this achievement.”

The new classification is for all properties within five road miles of the fire station and 1000 feet of a fire hydrant.

The Guthrie Fire Department provides fire services Guthrie and Logan County, including a fire district of approximately 165 square miles and Advanced Life Support ambulance service district to over 500 square miles in Logan County.  This is accomplished with 28 personnel, responding from a centrally-located fire station housing 3 fire engines, 1 ladder truck, 2 rescue units, 4 brush units, 1 water tanker, 2 rescue boats, 1 UTV and 2 command vehicles.

The new insurance rating takes effect May 1, 2022.
