A trip to the hospital turned into a life-changing moment for Guthrie firefighter and paramedic Justin Nelson and his wife, Tessa, when their baby decided to arrive sooner than expected.
On Wednesday, the Nelsons were on their way to Mercy Hospital, excited to welcome their first child. However, as contractions intensified, it became clear they wouldn’t make it in time. Thinking quickly, Justin, a licensed paramedic with Guthrie Fire-EMS, pulled his truck over on the side of the highway and prepared for an emergency delivery.
As baby Axton was being born, Justin noticed a critical complication—the umbilical cord had wrapped around his son’s neck. Staying calm under pressure, Justin relied on his paramedic training to carefully remove the cord, preventing potential danger. Moments later, the couple breathed a sigh of relief as they held their healthy baby boy for the first time.
Despite the chaos of the moment, both mother and baby were safe, and soon after, they were transported to the hospital for evaluation. The incredible story quickly spread throughout the Guthrie community, with Guthrie Fire and EMS offering their congratulations to the Nelson family.
For Justin, the moment was a unique blend of personal joy and professional duty—one he and Tessa will never forget. Now, baby Axton has quite the birth story to tell for years to come.
