Guthrie golfers continue hot play following state title run

Coming off the Class 5A state championship in May, members of the Guthrie High School boy’s golf team did not rest on their accomplishment with multiple golfers racking up top finishes this summer.

Leading the charge was rising junior Luke Morgan with a third place finish at the AJGA Kansas Junior at Buffalo Dunes in Garden City.

The AJGA is the most prestigious junior golf tour in the world.

The events are filled by invitation and qualifying only and most fields contain the top players from Europe, Asia and South America in addition to this country’s elite golfers.

Morgan also picked up a quality win at the South Central PGA “Player’s” Tour Stop No. 4 at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course.  His four under (140) over two rounds gave him a three shot victory.

Bo Robbins, an incoming GHS junior, came away with a convincing win in the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour’s Woodmoor Classic held in Monument, Colorado.

Robbins followed the tournament win with a runner-up finish at the SCPGA “Player’s” Tour Stop No. 6 at Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow. He climbed from the 11th position to second in round two by firing an event low plus-one (73).

Due to their performances on the Player’s Tour, Robbins and Morgan for the second year in a row accrued enough points to compete for the West Squad in the annual Oakley Cup Matches, a Ryder Cup-style format, at Shangri-La in Afton, OK.

A scheduling conflict did not allow Morgan to attend, but Robbins competed and finished with two wins, no losses and one halved match to help the West forge a 12-12 tie with the East squad.

Rising GHS sophomore Brady Hirzel, a key cog in the state title machine, picked up two wins on the 14-15 year old SCPGA Junior Tour.

Hirzel fired a 69 on June 21st at Trosper Park in OKC to earn medalist honors and followed that up with a win at Ponca City Country Club four days later.

Incoming GHS senior Luke Dale picked up a couple of top 10 finishes, including at the Lincoln Park Junior by shooting a 78 and again at the Dornick Hills Junior.

When the 2019 spring season arrives, the Bluejays will defend their team title by returning the top six players from last year. Related articleVideo: Guthrie Golf claims 5A State Championship
