United Week is off and running at Guthrie High School. Students and businesses are helping raise funds to support Koleton Richardson, who suffered a spinal injury following an ATV accident.
On Friday, students held a battle of the sexes for their opening assembly. Boys and girls played games to see who was the best. Girls broke the tie and won the spirit stick in the last round. Games included who could lick the whip cream the quickest, condiment twister, hair designs with shaving cream, watermelon eating contest, spam eating contest and the banana and sprite challenge.
This week restaurants will be donating a portion of their profits for the cause.
On Monday the public is invited to Billy Sims BBQ, Pizza Hut on Tuesday and Stacy’s Place on Thursday.
Competition will heat up again on Tuesday with a three-on-three basketball games between the students and on Wednesday a game of dodgeball will be held for the students.
On Friday, students will hold a closing assembly.
Finally, the first annual United Week mixed doubles tennis tournament will be March 13 at the high school tennis courts at 1 p.m. The tournament will be single elimination and is open to all ages. Entry fee is $20 per team.
On January 30, Koleton, an avid ATV/MX racer, was practicing on the track when he wrecked his ATV. He was mediflighted to Oklahoma City, where he underwent emergency spinal surgery. While the surgery to fix the C4 vertebrae was successful, doctors have not determine a way to repair the damaged spinal cord.
Koleton has been accepted into the Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Program at Craig Hospital, a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital specializing in spinal cord injuries, located in Colorado.
The severity of his injury leaves many unanswered questions, but Koleton continues to fight. A gofundme page has been setup.
