The Guthrie High School student council has announced their annual food drive set to take place next week and just in time for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. School organizations will compete to see who can raise the most donations.
The food drive is set for Nov. 16-20 with a theme of Most Wanted.
“This year we have decided to change things up from the tradition of having grades compete against one another. Instead, the organizations within the school will engage in a spirited competition,” senior Mollie Swartzbaugh said.
Organizations have been put together so that numbers are close to equal across the competition. Students not involved in any organization or sports team will be considered free agents. Free agents will have the choice of donating to an organization/sports team or their own free agent bin.
On Nov. 17 students will package food for Stamp Out Starvation. This organization is a non-profitable and it provides food for the children in Frettas, Haiti. The packaging will be take place in the cafeteria during each hour up to 7th hour. The packaging goal is 30,000 to 40,000 meals.
“We will also attempt to serve this meal for lunch Tuesday to give our children an insight on what the kids in Haiti actually consume every day for every meal,” Swartzbaugh said
All donations will go towards The Hands of Jesus Food Bank here in Guthrie.
“We want to provide the food pantries with food that people actually want to eat and enjoy,” Swartzbaugh said.
Peanut butter, cereal, tuna, beans, canned soup and macaroni and cheese are the most requested food items and are worth five points to the student organization.
Every other food item that is given will be worth one point each. The group with the most points at the end of the week will be named this year’s Food Drive winner.
The winners of the can food drive will have a donut party the following week.
The organizations are classified as:
Group 1: Band and Key Club
Group 2: Football, Soccer, Youth and Government, and Academic Team
Group 3: FFA, FCCLA, and Drama
Group 4: Basketball, Heritage Club, Yearbook, and English Club
Group 5: Baseball, Tennis, and Choir
Group 6: JROTC, Golf, and Softball
