It was back-to-back home runs that put the icing on the cake for the 4th ranked Guthrie baseball team as they collected a big district win over Bishop McGuinness.
Guthrie collected 13 hits, including three home runs to defeat McGuinness 11-3. Meanwhile, junior right-hander Bryan Dutton picked up his fourth win on the mound to remain unbeaten this season as he pitched the distance.
The 12-2 BlueJays, who have now won three in a row, remain perfect in district play (5-0) while the Irish fall to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the district. District results will decide regional seedings and regional hosts.
Already leading 8-3 in the fourth inning, senior John Clark (2) drilled a 2-run homer and was quickly followed by sophomore Donovan Jordan’s (1) solo shot. In the same inning, senior Hayden Seifert (2) drilled a 2-run homer to begin the 6-run inning that ultimately decided the game. Clark finished with a game high 3 RBI’s.
Not to be out done, sophomore Jacob Chappell was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI’s and three runs scored.
The BlueJays struck first by crossing four runs in the first inning to set the tone. The inning was highlighted by Chappell’s 2-RBI single. Luke Davis, Chappell, Scott Pickle, Clint Simek and Clark each picked up a hit in the frame.
Dutton showed great control as he allowed just one walk and spreading out six Irish hits over the seven innings.
The Jays and Irish are set to conclude their season series with a 4:30 first pitch on Tuesday.
