Guthrie Junior High Softball off to stellar start

The Guthrie Junior High Lady Jays softball team has started the 2022 season with another solid start. The team kicked off their season competing against two 6A schools – Jenks and Owasso – at the Broken Arrow Scrimmage Festival on August 6. Guthrie JH was the better team against both schools.

They followed that performance with a strong start to the regular season handily defeating Enid before losing a close contest against Noble. The Lady Jays rebounded strongly with wins against district rivals Carl Albert (4-0) and Piedmont (5-3) on back-to-back days. All games so far have been away but the team plays its home opener this evening (Thursday) against the OKC Broncos at the high school field at 5 p.m.

Coach Ron Gillett, who is in his 10th year coaching Junior High Softball in Guthrie, is extremely excited about this year’s team. “These girls play with so much heart,” said Gillett. “They refuse to give up and battle hard. To go to Carl Albert and Piedmont and defeat them on their own field in 100-degree heat shows their character. I am so proud of them.”

While the team lost a few key pieces from last year’s squad, who are already contributing for the high school team, this group is very talented and has lots of experience playing both school and travel ball. Gillett noted, “It’s a luxury as a coach to have a few players that can play multiple positions and that I can move them anywhere and still feel confident that we’re strong across the diamond.” This team has high expectations for the season.

The upcoming schedule for the JH Lady Jays:

Tuesday, August 23rd @ El Reno
Friday, August 26th @ OKC Broncos
Monday, August 29th vs Carl Albert
Tuesday, August 30th vs Del City
