Guthrie Little League Baseball donates $14,005 to GHS baseball program

Before the first pitch at Thursday’s game inside Squires Field, a presentation was made that will benefit future Bluejays and the Guthrie High School baseball program.

Daniel Calvert, President of the Guthrie Little League Baseball Association, presented Guthrie head baseball coach Casey Porter with an oversized check of $14,005 to go towards purchasing a new scoreboard.

The ceremony can be viewed in the video below.

Porter says the program continues to gain momentum.

“Guthrie Baseball has one of the steepest traditions in Oklahoma as far as baseball goes. There are a lot of people who have helped build that tradition.”

The scoreboard is projected to be installed as early as this summer.

Calvert says the new scoreboard will help invest into the future.

“Coach Porter and the Bluejays Baseball program have been tremendous supporters of Guthrie Little League Baseball,” Calvert said.

He continued, “The new scoreboard gave us an opportunity to show our appreciation and invest in an item that will be used for years to come.”

The little league program has built up their cash flow over the last several years, but have not been able to put any funding toward the playing fields due to the limitations of the Cottonwood Flats (location of the playing fields).

“The board voted to allocate the total purchase price,” Calvert said. “Because we are unable to use our resources in  coordination with the City of Guthrie to improve the Cottonwood Flats.”

Due to the playing fields being in a flood zone, construction in the Flats is limited such as constructing restrooms.

Officials with the City of Guthrie will soon begin looking at the possibility of building a complex to support little league sports, including baseball.

Following the presentation, Calvert tossed the ceremonial pitch. Afterwards, the Jays went on to win 12-0 in five innings. Three pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter. Related article: Watch: Baseball run-rules, no hits Del City; Little League donates $14,000 to the program
