The Guthrie Public Schools Board of Education approved the recommendation of Jon Chappell to serve as interim athletic director for the BlueJays. The recommendation came from Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson during Monday’s regular Board of Education meeting.
“We are pleased that Jon is willing to serve in this capacity,” Simpson said in a press release.
Chappell, who began serving his alma mater in 1990 as the head baseball coach, will teach his classroom for the remainder of the week before serving full time as the athletic director. He will also continue to serve as an assistant football coach for the duration of the 2014 football season.
The position was opened on Sept. 24 following the resignation of longtime athletic director Gary Boxley.
“The timing of Mr. Boxley’s resignation presents some additional challenges and our goal is to continue the excellence established under his watch while minimizing any effects on classroom instruction in the district,” Simpson said.
In the coming weeks, the district will name an interim head baseball coach who will lead the baseball program in the 2015 season.
The school district will continue to accept applications for both positions and are expected to name the full-time positions following the school year.
Chappell, who won over 500 games as the Jays baseball coach, was inducted into the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association Hall in 2013. He is also a member of the Guthrie High School Hall of Fame.
Chappell is married to Sharla, have three children (Britney, Justin and Landry) and two grandchild (Braylen and Emma).
