Guthrie Noon Lions Club – A great community partner

The Guthrie Noon Lions Club, founded in 1911, recently celebrated another successful and fulfilling year of living their motto — “We Serve”.  Club President, Cheryl Tarter, recently reflected on 2013 as a year of great achievement.

Lions Club“We provided over $ 10,000 this year in support of various civic ventures and our partnerships with local and state-wide events and activities has never been stronger.   Numerous fund raisers throughout the year like the pancake feed, the fish fry and of course the fruit sale provide the financial base to support various Lion’s signature eye sight related programs as well as presenting an opportunity to give back to our community in very specific ways.  This year we again provided two $1,000 college scholarships to deserving Guthrie High School seniors.  We were the first civic organization to contribute to United Way of Logan County, another $1,000, and the board approved a sizeable donation to help maintain our wonderful Oklahoma Sports Museum.  In addition to financial support, our members provide a huge amount of time and energy on various community programs and projects.  We are proud of our club’s involvement in the community and pleased that we are making a difference!”

Lion Bill Wagoner also noted, “The Lions Club has been a consistent supporter of the American Legion’s Boys and Girls State programs which focus on developing youth leadership skills and knowledge of governmental systems.  This year the Guthrie Lions Club sponsored four (4) high school students in this endeavor.  This is clearly an excellent investment in our youth and the future leaders of our community.”

Lion John Wood, Club President Elect, added “Our focus on youth is also reflected in our significant support of the Lions Perkins Boys Ranch and the presentation of special “welcome” classroom supply kits for every new teacher in the Guthrie school system this year.  Additionally, we periodically highlight high school seniors for special achievements at our meetings.”

Of course Lions Clubs world-wide are known for their attention to improving all aspects of individual vision.  The Guthrie Noon Lions Club is no different and Lion Debra Brewer, Eyesight Chair, noted the support the club gives to the Oklahoma Eye Bank and other eye related programs.

“The Oklahoma Eye Bank has been responsible for over 20,000 corneal transplant surgeries since its inception.  Our club contributes significantly to that Bank.  We also have our own eye exam and eye glasses program for individuals who cannot afford these basic elements for good eyesight.  Last year we assisted 38 needy Guthrie residents in this program.  We help make a difference in the lives of many individuals; locally and state-wide.”

The Guthrie Noon Lions Club meets every Friday at noon at the American Legion Building.  Each week, in addition to a wonderful meal and meaningful fellowship, a special guest presentation is made, generally focusing on a program, process or activity that directly affects our community and our lives.

Membership Chair, Lion Sylvia Ochs, added “Lions are women and men who want to make a positive impact on their community. Membership is open to all who want to make a difference, to all who want “to serve”.  Join us and help make that motto happen again in 2014.”
