The post office in downtown Guthrie will soon carry the name of one of the community’s most decorated veterans.
President Donald Trump signed legislation on Dec. 18 officially designating the U.S. Post Office located at 201 W. Oklahoma Ave. as the Oscar J. Upham Post Office.

The bill, S. 2293, was introduced by U.S. Sen. James Lankford and supported by Sen. Markwayne Mullin along with members of Oklahoma’s congressional delegation, including U.S. Rep. Stephanie Bice.
Oscar J. Upham was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1901 for his service during the Philippine-American War. Following his military career, Upham returned to Guthrie, where he served the community as a mail carrier for more than 30 years.
In announcing the dedication, Lankford said Upham’s courage in combat and his long-standing commitment to Guthrie made him deserving of the honor. He noted that Upham’s legacy reflects both extraordinary military service and a lifetime of dedication to his hometown.
Upham’s family expressed appreciation for the recognition. His great-granddaughter, Katharine Hayes, said the naming of the post office will help preserve his story for future generations and honor his values of service, duty, and love of country.
A formal dedication ceremony at the Guthrie post office is now being organized, with organizers hopeful the event will take place in February. Additional details are expected to be announced as plans are finalized.
