Guthrie Public Schools cancels classes for Tuesday due to teacher walkout

Guthrie Public Schools will cancel classes for the second day in a row for the teacher walkout.

The school district made the announcement on Monday that classes will not be held on Tuesday, April 3.

The announcement comes after the first day (Monday) of the teacher walkout.

“This closure is needed due to the number of teachers indicating they will be absent far exceeding the number of substitute teachers available,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said.

Several school districts made a similar announcement earlier in the day, including Cashion, Chickasha, Oklahoma City, El Reno, Stillwater, Edmond and Deer Creek.

Guthrie school teachers travel to Oklahoma City for the statewide walkout on the steps of the State Capitol.

Lawmakers did not discuss any legislation regarding education funding on Monday.

“Today, House Democrats stood with teachers and attempted several procedural maneuvers to bring legislation to the House floor that would provide sustainable long-term funding to education,” a press statement said from the House of Representatives.

“Unfortunately, all but two Republicans voted not to hear the legislation that would have ended the capital gains tax exemption, which has cost Oklahoma more than $460 million over the course of five years and has shown a return investment of just $9 million.”

All 12 month Guthrie school employees will report to work as normal or must take the appropriate leave. The planned administration of the ACT test at Guthrie High School will go on as scheduled.

Breakfast for students taking the test will be available at 7:30 a.m. at the High School.
