Mitchell began teaching in 1987 at Langston Elementary School before joining Guthrie Public Schools in 1993 as a 5th-grade teacher at Guthrie Upper Elementary School (GUES). In 2010, she transitioned to 6th-grade Social Studies, a role she passionately embraced until her passing.

Known for her warm smile and dedication to students, Mitchell left a lasting mark on the GUES community.

“In the thirteen years I had the honor to work with her, she earned my respect and admiration as an advocate for students,” said Guthrie Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson. “As both a parent and colleague, I’m saddened by the loss of Ms. Mitchell. Not only did we lose an excellent educator, I (along with many) lost a friend. She will be deeply missed.”

Many others shared their memories and thoughts on social media.

“One of the best! She had such an impact on all three of my boys! She will be greatly missed!”
