Guthrie Public Schools shares resources for families affected by SNAP interruption

Guthrie Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson has issued a message to district families regarding the potential temporary interruption of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits beginning Nov. 1, due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Dr. Simpson acknowledged that many families rely on SNAP to provide meals and that the disruption may cause financial strain and uncertainty. He emphasized that Guthrie Public Schools remains committed to supporting students and families during this time.

Students will continue to receive breakfast and lunch at school based on their current eligibility status. Families experiencing changes in income or financial circumstances can apply or update their free or reduced-price meal applications through the district’s website at www.guthrieps.net/child-nutrition-home.

Parents can also dial 211 for information about food banks, pantries, and other community support programs across Oklahoma. Locally, food assistance is available at:

  • God’s Food Bank, 402 W. Vilas, 405-260-1412 (Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.)
  • Hands of Jesus, 2403 W. Noble Ave., 405-260-3440 (Thursdays, 1–5:30 p.m.)
  • Brunch on Noble, 102 E. Noble, 405-282-0835 (Saturday Brunch)

Dr. Simpson added that the district’s staff is available to assist families with questions, concerns, or needs. Counseling resources are also available for students who may be experiencing anxiety or worry due to the situation.

More information about the impact of the government shutdown on SNAP benefits can be found on the Oklahoma Department of Human Services FAQ page, and additional ways to support affected families are available through the DHS “Be a Neighbor” initiative.

“Although this situation is beyond our control, we can decide how to care for one another,” Dr. Simpson said. “Our school team is committed to keeping you informed and ensuring every student feels safe, secure, and supported.”
