Guthrie returns five interceptions for touchdowns in win over Piedmont

Guthrie’s win over Piedmont on Friday night was similar to one of the most popular Oprah episodes.

Instead of ‘you get a car’ – it was you get a pick six, you get a pick six and you get a pick six.

The Bluejays hauled in five, yes five, pick sixes in a 51-20 must need win over Piedmont on Senior Night.

Guthrie continues to control their own playoff destiny with upcoming road games in Woodward and Guymon.

It appeared the Jays were headed into the locker room with a 7-6 lead, but linebacker Troy Branson collected the first pick six with a 41-yard score with just 23 seconds left before the half.

So, it appeared the Jays were going to have a 14-6 lead at the half.

Nope.

As the Jays started to head their way to the locker room following a Piedmont run play, the Wildcats took a mysterious timeout with just one second left on the game clock and on the Guthrie 46-yard line.

The Wildcats, on third down, threw it down field and was intercepted by Marcellous Owens at the 24-yard line. Owens took off and was gaining momentum as he received blocks down the field before reaching the end zone and giving the Jays a 20-6 locker room lead.

In the second half, Hector Goosby added a 39-yard interception return.

Next it was Cale Coffman with a 90-yard interception return.

Finally, Owens added another interception into a score. This time from 25-yards out.

In additon, the Guthrie special teams added all but one extra point (following a penalty), a 28-yard field goal and a 66-yard onside kick return from Owens.

The Jays offense scored the first and only points in the first quarter on a Jackson Waddell 16-yard run.

In total, the Guthrie offense scored six points, special teams added 15 and the defense had 30 total points.
